When a hawk is found dead high in a tree, ensnared by a kite-string and dangling like the Hanged Man of the tarot, a newly ordained minister is confronted with big questions about the nature of the soul. An encounter with the hawk's widow reveals the bird to be both a powerful symbol and a once-living being. Struck by her grief — raw and unsentimental, unlike human mourning — he begins to ask what makes us, as humans, believe ourselves more worthy than other animals. And whether he might hold space, and offer humanity, to grant the animal’s spirit its own place in eternity.
